Luton Town FC‘s chief executive, Gary Sweet, has revealed plans for an enhanced stadium following the club’s season in the Premier League. Despite the Hatters’ relegation back to the Championship, the construction of the new stadium at Power Court is set to be ‘bigger, better, and bolder’.

Preliminary work on the stadium situated next to Luton’s railway station has already commenced, aiming for completion by the 2027-28 season. Sweet mentioned that potential delays could push this target to 2028-29 to avoid mid-season disruptions at Kenilworth Road.

In a recent Q&A session with Luton Town Supporters’ Trust, Sweet acknowledged the complexities surrounding the project, including external factors like Brexit, the conflict in Ukraine, interest rate rises, and soaring material costs.

Full plans for the expansive 17-acre site were submitted to Luton Borough Council last week, despite challenges and complications. Sweet emphasized that the central location of the new stadium aligns with the town’s identity and is optimal for a football club.

The initial capacity of the stadium was slated at 17,500, but the financial benefits of Premier League status have allowed for an increased capacity of 23,000 upon opening. The existing planning permission from 2019 covers the stadium, potential housing, and various community amenities.
