LONDON, England — Luton Town fell to a 5-3 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday, sealing their relegation from the Championship for the second consecutive season.

The Hatters entered the match needing a win to ensure their survival in the Championship. Instead, they found themselves facing a heavy defeat, dropping to League One just a year after their relegation from the Premier League.

West Brom opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Tom Fellows capitalized on a mistake by Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski. Fellows’ near-post shot slipped past Kaminski and into the net.

Luton quickly responded, with Millenic Alli dribbling past defender Kyle Bartley and firing an equalizer into the far corner.

However, Luton’s momentum was short-lived. Daryl Dike headed Albion back in front in the 30th minute with his first league goal since March 2023. Just three minutes later, Fellows scored his second, making it 3-1.

The situation worsened for Luton when Callum Styles scored West Brom’s fourth goal shortly after halftime. With their hopes dwindling, Luton manager Matt Bloomfield made halftime substitutions in an attempt to change the tide.

Despite a glimmer of hope when Jordan Clark slotted in a goal for Luton, West Brom quickly restored their lead with Styles scoring again, making it 5-2. Alli added another goal for Luton in the 88th minute, but it was not enough to keep them from relegation.

The result was combined with Hull City’s nail-biting 1-1 draw against Portsmouth, which confirmed Luton’s drop to League One due to an inferior goal difference.

Luton’s relegation marks the first time since Sunderland in 2018 that a club has dropped from the top flight to League One in consecutive seasons. The Hatters now face the challenge of rebuilding as they prepare for life in the third tier.
