LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rohan Crichton’s three-year-old colt Macho Music surged ahead in the final stretch of the Pat Day Mile, ultimately claiming victory on May 3, 2025.

The Pat Day Mile is part of the Kentucky Derby festivities, which continue today at Churchill Downs, marking the event’s 151st running. The Derby is regarded as “the most exciting two minutes in sports” and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

“People plan their outfits for the Derby much like a wedding,” said Jenny Pfanenstiel from Formé Millinery, underscoring the event’s importance to the community. The whole city prepares for the Derby, with schools closing the Friday before, hotels charging higher rates, and local businesses bustling with activity.

Macho Music, considered one of the long shots in the race, paid out $29.86 on a $2 bet, adding to the excitement surrounding the event. Interestingly, three of the past six races have been won by horses with long odds, an unpredictable trend that has recent Derby-goers buzzing.

In fact, last year’s race saw 18-1 Mystik Dan finish first, while 2023 featured 15-1 Mage and the astonishing 80-1 Rich Strike taking the crown in 2022. Macho Music’s win is just another confirmation of the unpredictable nature of horse racing.

Churchill Downs is known for its unique memorabilia and this year, the 151st Derby merchandise features everything from hats to glassware. Fans are encouraged to explore unique offerings that enhance their Derby experience.

A rain-soaked track made for a challenging day of racing, but it didn’t dampen spirits at the Derby. “It’s still raining,” said one observer, “but that hasn’t stopped the fun.”

As the day unfolds, eyes are set on more races and possible wins, with jockey Luis Saez in the spotlight for multiple races, including the Oaks where he recently made a mark.

Attendees eagerly anticipate the culmination of the Derby festivities, capturing the thrill of the event. Derby weekend is bustling, showcasing not just horse racing but a celebration of the local culture, fashion, and community spirit.
