In the opening games, No. 6 Michigan outlasted 11th-seeded Iowa State, winning 80-74 thanks to standout performances from Jordan Hobbs, who scored 28 points, and Olivia Olson, with 16 points. Michigan will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Stephen F. Austin game on Sunday in South Bend, Indiana.

Georgia Amoore from fourth-seeded Kentucky also delivered a notable performance, scoring 34 points in a 79-78 victory over 13th-seeded Liberty. Despite nearly squandering a 17-point lead, Kentucky secured a spot in the second round, with Amoore contributing crucial free throws in the final moments.

In a matchup of 9th versus 8th seeds, Indiana triumphed over Utah 76-68, marking the Hoosiers’ sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament opening win. Yarden Garzon led her team with 17 points, while Shay Ciezki added 16. Indiana is expected to face top seed South Carolina later in the tournament.

Meanwhile, a concerning injury overshadowed the third-seeded Notre Dame’s impressive 106-54 victory over Stephen F. Austin. Olivia Miles exited the game with a left knee injury, having contributed only two points and eight assists. Her status remains uncertain as Notre Dame prepares for its next game against Michigan.
