March Madness: Women’s NCAA Tournament Begins with High Stakes

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The 2025 Women’s NCAA Tournament commenced Friday with 64 teams eager to stake their claim in college basketball history. As the first round gets underway, fans are treated to a slate of competitive matchups, setting the stage for a thrilling postseason.
Among the notable first-round games, No. 6 Michigan triumphed over No. 11 Iowa State in an 80-74 nailbiter. Freshman Jordan Hobbs led the Wolverines with 28 points, advancing the team (23-10) to face the winner of the Notre Dame–Stephen F. Austin game on Sunday. ‘We knew we had to bring our best game,’ Hobbs said post-game. ‘The tournament is intense, and we came ready to fight.’
In another highlight, fourth-seeded Kentucky narrowly defeated 13th-seeded Liberty 79-78. Georgia Amoore scored 34 points, demonstrating her prowess as she sank three crucial free throws in the final moments. ‘I just wanted to help my team win,’ Amoore mentioned after the game. ‘We need to stay focused and ready for the next round.’
Meanwhile, Indiana, as a No. 9 seed, secured their sixth consecutive tournament-opening victory, defeating eighth-seeded Utah 76-68. Yarden Garzon scored 17 points, while Shay Ciezki added 16. With this victory, the Hoosiers (20 wins for six seasons in a row) are poised for a likely matchup against defending champions South Carolina.
However, the day wasn’t without concern for Notre Dame as star guard Olivia Miles exited the court due to a left knee injury during their 106-54 win against Stephen F. Austin. Miles, who has been instrumental throughout the season, managed only two points and eight assists before her departure. ‘We hope it’s not serious,’ said Head Coach Niele Ivey. ‘Olivia is a vital part of this team.’
The tournament’s intensity continues into Saturday with several key matchups, including defending champions South Carolina facing 16th-seeded Tennessee Tech. The stakes are high, as one win could lead teams closer to the coveted Sweet 16 round.
As teams compete for glory, fans across the nation are expected to tune in for the remainder of the tournament, with many contemplating their predictions of who will emerge victorious. With thrilling performances and skilled athletes in play, this year’s Women’s NCAA Tournament holds the promise of unforgettable moments and perhaps a few surprises along the way.
