Madrid Derby September 2024

Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid have released their starting lineups for the highly anticipated Madrid Derby. Real Madrid’s lineup includes goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, defenders Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, and Ferland Mendy. The midfield features Aurelien Tchouameni, Luka Modric, and Federico Valverde, with forwards Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Jr. leading the attack. Atletico Madrid, yet to confirm their lineup, is expected to start with Jan Oblak, Marcos Llorente, Robin Le Normand, Reinildo Mandava, Jose Gimenez, Rodrigo Riquelme, Koke, Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo De Paul, Antoine Griezmann, and Julian Alvarez.

The importance of the match escalates as recent results have tightened the race for the La Liga title. Barcelona, the current league leaders, suffered a surprising 4-2 defeat to Osasuna. Thus, a victory for either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid would narrow Barcelona’s lead at the top of the standings. Real Madrid currently sits in second place with an unbeaten record in the season’s first seven matches, including five wins and two draws, following their mid-week 3-1 Champions League success over Stuttgart.

Atletico Madrid enters the match in third place, trailing Real Madrid by just two points. Diego Simeone’s team remains unbeaten in the league, with four wins out of seven matches, demonstrating defensive solidity by only conceding three goals this season. However, they will be without key players Cesar Azpilicueta, Thomas Lemar, and Pablo Barrios due to injuries, although Julian Alvarez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Samuel Lino are expected to make the cut.

Real Madrid will also manage without French forward Kylian Mbappe, who suffered a thigh injury earlier. Additions to coach Carlo Ancelotti’s squad include the returning Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Carvajal, who missed their previous win over Alaves.

The match will kick off at 21:00 CET (03:00 EST) at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain. Fans can watch the thrilling encounter on various platforms, including Movistar La Liga, Premier Sports, Amazon Prime Video, Sky Ireland Sports Extra, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes, depending on their region.
