Madrid Open Tennis Matches Power Outage

MADRID, Spain — The Madrid Open resumed Tuesday after power was restored at the Caja Magica tennis complex, following a major blackout that postponed 22 matches the day before.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating 13th-seeded Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought match, winning 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Swiatek enjoyed a “more relaxed” day due to the unexpected break, saying, “I enjoyed the time off, and I tried to just recover.”

The blackout also caused delays at the event, as gates were initially kept closed due to lingering issues. However, organizers quickly restored the schedule without major alterations.

Swiatek’s next match will be against Madison Keys, who defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-3. This meeting is significant for Swiatek, who previously lost to Keys in the Australian Open semifinals. “I think it will be different this time,” Swiatek stated.

Aryna Sabalenka also progressed to the last eight, defeating 44th-ranked Emma Stearns 6-2, 6-4. This marks her fourth quarterfinal appearance in Madrid within five years.

On the men’s side, 21st-ranked Francisco Cerundolo pulled off an upset against second-seeded Alexander Zverev, winning 7-5, 6-3. Zverev acknowledged Cerundolo’s superior play, stating, “He played better than me today.”

In an unfortunate turn, Italian player Matteo Berrettini withdrew due to an abdominal injury, leading to a walkover for his opponent.

Ticket holders from Monday’s matches faced complications due to the blackout, causing large lines as many fans were denied entry. Organizers later announced that those who purchased tickets would receive full refunds automatically.
