Magic Fall to Celtics Despite Strong Late Rally
BOSTON, Massachusetts — The Orlando Magic lost to the Boston Celtics 138-129 on Sunday evening, marking a challenging start to their three-game road trip. The team, missing several key players including star forward Paolo Banchero, fought back from a 26-point deficit but could not secure the win.
Banchero, who is recovering from a left groin strain, watched from the bench as his teammates battled against the Celtics at TD Garden. The Magic also ruled out guard Jalen Suggs and center Wendell Carter Jr. due to injuries. Suggs is still managing a left knee injury, while Carter is sidelined with a left ankle sprain.
Despite their absences, Orlando showcased its depth with Anthony Black scoring a career-high 30 points, and rookies Noah Penda and Goga Bitadze adding 18 and 13 points, respectively. Head coach Jamahl Mosley praised his team’s resilience and ability to stay competitive during a tough matchup against Boston.
“Depth and defense,” Mosley said after the game. “We have to do a better job; we gave up 48 in the second quarter. That’s what we’ve got to continue to harp on — our defensive standard.” Mosley noted that with a long season ahead, having players ready to step in is crucial.
Banchero, who has missed six straight games, expressed optimism about his recovery. “I think I’m in a good spot, just doing some movement stuff. The groin feels really good so the recovery’s been going well,” he stated.
The Magic have gone 4-2 without Banchero this season. However, they are looking forward to his return as they prepare for an upcoming game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. Suggs, Carter, and Bitadze are also expected to rejoin the lineup after being removed from the injury report.
After this latest loss, the Magic stand at 10-8 and are determined to regain momentum as they head into another important game this week. Banchero remains hopeful, stating, “I’m definitely, pretty close,” indicating that he may be back on the court soon.
