Magic Rally to Overcome Hawks in Thrilling Comeback

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Orlando Magic erased a 19-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Hawks 114-108 on February 20, 2025. Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 36 points, showcasing his talents during the crucial late stages of the game.
The victory gives the Magic a 1 1/2-game lead over the Hawks in the Eastern Conference playoff race, evens the season series at 1-1, and ends a three-game losing streak against Atlanta.
Trailing 103-103 following a basket by Caris LeVert with 2:57 left, the Magic embarked on a critical scoring run, netting nine consecutive points. Banchero and Cole Anthony each hit key three-pointers, re-establishing momentum for the Magic and sealing the victory.
Banchero’s performance included 11 rebounds and five assists, while Franz Wagner contributed 25 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Wendell Carter Jr. added a season-high 15 rebounds to complement his team’s strong effort.
On the other side, Trae Young excelled for the Hawks, scoring 38 points in his 16th game of the season with 30-plus points, but it wasn’t enough to clinch the win.
The Hawks jumped out to an 18-point lead in the first quarter, propelled by solid shooting from Young and contributions from teammates. Clint Capela‘s return from injury added energy to the Atlanta roster, as they led 33-21 after the first quarter.
Despite their promising start, the Hawks struggled to maintain their lead. The Magic capitalized on their opportunities, outscoring Atlanta 23-10 through the last five minutes of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to just one point at halftime.
“We knew we had to keep fighting,” Banchero said post-game. “The game isn’t over until the final buzzer, and we just kept chipping away at their lead.”
By the end of the third quarter, the Magic had gained control of the game, leading 90-81. Their success continued into the fourth quarter as they initially surged to a game-high 11-point lead before clinching the win.
The Hawks now face a quick turnaround, preparing to host the Detroit Pistons on February 23. Meanwhile, the Magic will begin a seven-game homestand against the Memphis Grizzlies on February 21.
