Makar Brothers Shine as Colorado Hockey Eyes Playoff Glory

DENVER — The excitement is palpable as the Stanley Cup Playoffs kick off, with the spotlight shining on the Makar brothers. Cale Makar, a celebrated Stanley Cup champion and Norris Trophy winner, has set a high bar, but the younger Taylor Makar is ready to carve out his own legacy.
After a standout senior season at the University of Maine, Taylor recently signed an entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche, joining the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. “Their pipeline to the Avs is huge here, and they do a great job of developing players,” Taylor said. “So that’s why I’m super excited to be here and work with this coaching staff and just keep growing and learning how to play the pro game.”
Coaches are optimistic about Taylor’s potential, citing his size, speed, and relentless work ethic. However, transitioning to professional hockey isn’t easy. Thankfully, Taylor has Cale as a vital support system, providing guidance on everything from nutrition to skating drills. “I always talk to him about that stuff,” Taylor said. “We’re always in contact.”
Cale has high hopes for his brother, stating, “He’s got a lot of intangibles; once he puts them all together, I think he’s got a really great career ahead. It’s fun to have family close now.”
The sibling rivalry that fueled their childhood was filled with competitive backyard battles, but now, it drives their pursuit of excellence on the ice. “Every day was a fight,” Taylor recalled with a laugh. “It was super competitive, but I think that’s what both makes us hockey players and gamers.”
As Taylor sets his sights on making his NHL debut, he jokes about the day Cale might have to wear a jersey with “C. Makar” on it. With determination, they both continue to work hard, aiming for their dreams.
The Eagles recently celebrated their first-ever Pacific Division title and are poised to make a run in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Avalanche are preparing to take a 2-0 lead against the Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday night. As both siblings aim for success, the Makar name is sure to leave a lasting mark on Colorado hockey.
