Mallorca Ends Eleven-Year Wait with Victory in Andalusia
Mallorca secured a significant win in Andalusia by defeating Real Betis 2-1 in a La Liga fixture on Monday, marking their first victory in the region in more than a decade. The match saw Mallorca coming from behind to snatch the victory, with the decisive strike coming in stoppage time.
The match, held in Seville, saw some home fans protest by refusing to take their seats at the beginning in objection to inconvenient match kick-off times. These times have become more frequent as authorities attempt to cater to television audiences and alleviate fixture congestion.
Real Betis took an early lead through Giovani Lo Celso, who scored from 25 meters out in the seventh minute. However, Mallorca responded almost immediately with an equalizer by Dani Rodríguez, who was set up by a brilliant pass from Canadian international Cyle Larin.
The second half saw impressive performances from both goalkeepers, preventing either side from taking the lead until the third minute of injury time. Valery Fernández secured the win for Mallorca with a low shot after Real Betis failed to clear a corner, assisted by a headed pass from Samú Costa.
This victory propelled Mallorca into fifth place in La Liga with 11 points, three points ahead of Betis, although having played an extra match. The win was a significant breakthrough, ending their winless streak in Andalusia.
