Man City Blocks Chelsea’s Deadline Day Move for Rising Star Nico O’Reilly
MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City has rejected Chelsea‘s late attempt to sign 19-year-old midfielder Nico O’Reilly, ensuring the highly rated academy product remains at the Etihad Stadium. The decision comes after Chelsea inquired about a potential transfer on deadline day, but City’s insistence on a buy-back clause proved a dealbreaker.
O’Reilly, who made his senior league debut earlier this season in a 6-0 win over Ipswich Town, is regarded as one of City’s brightest young talents. He has made six senior appearances this campaign, including a start in the Community Shield victory over Manchester United in August. City’s reluctance to part ways with O’Reilly mirrors their previous stance on Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea in 2023 and has since flourished at Stamford Bridge.
“I am pretty sure he can help us,” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. “He can play with us, even as a holding midfielder when Rodri is not there. We have Kalvin Phillips. I don’t know what is going to happen, but we have Kova (Mateo Kovacic), and we have Nico. I know he can play it.”
Chelsea, under manager Enzo Maresca, had been scrambling to bolster their midfield options before the transfer window closed. The Blues reportedly explored several targets, including Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, but balked at his £70 million price tag. O’Reilly emerged as a potential alternative, but City’s demand for a buy-back clause complicated negotiations.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed Chelsea’s interest, stating, “Chelsea keep working on a new midfielder with an enquiry made to Man City for 2005-born midfielder Nico O’Reilly. Man City don’t want to lose future control on the player — not an easy deal.”
O’Reilly’s limited first-team opportunities this season have not diminished his standing within the club. Guardiola has praised his versatility and potential, highlighting his ability to adapt to multiple roles in midfield. City’s decision to retain O’Reilly underscores their commitment to nurturing young talent and avoiding a repeat of the Palmer situation, where a promising academy graduate thrived elsewhere.
Chelsea, meanwhile, continues to grapple with midfield depth issues. Romeo Lavia‘s injury has left the team heavily reliant on Moises Caicedo, prompting the club to explore additional signings. While O’Reilly is no longer an option, Chelsea remains active in the transfer market, with Saint-Etienne’s Mathis Amougou still on their radar.
As the transfer window closes, City’s retention of O’Reilly signals their confidence in his development and future contributions to the first team. For Chelsea, the search for midfield reinforcements continues, with the club now forced to look elsewhere for solutions.
