Manchester City Edges Past Aston Villa with a 2-1 Victory in Women’s Super League Clash
Manchester City ascended to the top of the Women's Super League after securing a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, marking their third consecutive comeback win in a week. City faced an early setback as Aston Villa opened the scoring 20 minutes in with Gabi Nunes netting her debut goal for the club against the flow of play.
Despite City’s dominance in possession and chances, they struggled to make a significant impact on Villa’s defense until the second half. The breakthrough came when Lauren Hemp capitalized on a misplaced positioning of Villa’s goalkeeper, Sabrina D’Angelo, to equalize the score.
Manchester City’s perseverance paid off as Jill Roord scored the winning goal, marking her first since returning from a knee ligament injury. This victory allowed City to leapfrog Brighton and Manchester United to the league’s summit, a position strengthened by their recent performances, which include victories against Liverpool and St. Pölten in the Champions League.
Villa’s struggles continue under new manager Robert de Pauw, as they remain winless in the league with only two points from five games. The team’s early lead—thanks to a deft flick by Nunes, Villa’s summer recruit from Levante—was not enough to deter a resilient City performance.
City’s consistency comes despite frequently conceding first. They have secured seven out of their 13 league points from games where they trailed, showcasing a robust ability to rally and secure victories.
Manager Gareth Taylor expressed satisfaction with the result, emphasizing the team’s resilience. “Even at half-time, I told the girls it was very good. We just did not control one action from Villa,” Taylor stated to BBC Sport. “What I loved was we stayed calm, continued to play our game, and made tactical tweaks that paid off.”
Lauren Hemp, instrumental to the comeback, praised City’s fighting spirit. “It feels great. The aim was to win, and we managed to do it,” Hemp commented. “Games like this last season might have ended in a draw, so it’s crucial we’ve learned and improved.”
Aston Villa faces a challenging task ahead as they seek their first WSL victory. Despite commendable efforts, including a well-crafted opener from Kirsty Hanson, defensive lapses allowed City to seize control.
As the league progresses, Manchester City maintains an impressive form with 19 wins out of their last 21 league games. Meanwhile, the pressure mounts on Villa to transform spirited performances into tangible results under de Pauw’s leadership.
