Manchester, England – Manchester City is set to face Plymouth Argyle this Saturday, March 1, at 2:45 p.m. local time at Etihad Stadium in a pivotal FA Cup fifth round match. The outcome will determine the team’s progression in the tournament after their recent 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient.

Manager Pep Guardiola expressed confidence in defender Vitor Reis, who joined the team recently for a record fee of €37 million (approximately $232 million), emphasizing his dedication. “Vitor Reis has shown incredible focus since joining us from Brazil. We’re pleased with the potential he has,” Guardiola noted.

Despite being the most expensive Brazilian player, Reis has seen limited action, having played just 45 minutes in the FA Cup, while teammates Omar Marmoush, Khusanov, and Nico González have garnered more playing time.

As City gears up for the FA Cup match, they also navigate challenges from off-the-field controversies. Guardiola has declined to comment on allegations made by La Liga president Javier Tebas, who claimed that City engaged in financial misconduct, suggesting that a legal complaint has been filed with the European Commission to investigate the club’s finances. These assertions were made during the Financial Times Business of Football Summit.

City has denied Tebas’s claims, stating they are unfounded while sources close to the organization highlighted Tebas’s history of criticizing the club as potentially biased. Guardiola has refrained from engaging in conversations regarding Tebas, brusquely answering media inquiries with, “Next,” emphasizing his desire to focus on the team’s performance.

Guardiola and City also await a decision from the Premier League regarding over 100 alleged financial rule violations in a ongoing case unrelated to the accusations from Tebas. Last season, City claimed their fourth consecutive Premier League title and secured the Champions League trophy, raising questions about whether their success has attracted heightened scrutiny.

In addressing the potential correlation between their achievements and the recent accusations, Guardiola stated, “It happened in the past with UEFA, and in a few weeks, the Premier League judgment will arrive. We hope to discuss it afterward. I can’t say if it is related to our success.” The manager noted that the team’s strategy emphasizes treating every match as a final.

Simultaneously, City is preparing for a crucial offseason in building the squad for future campaigns, recognizing the need for bolstering the left-back position. Club officials have zeroed in on Milan’s Theo Hernández, as his contract is nearing its end. “We cannot afford to lose players on free transfers,” commented Milan’s director Moncada, hinting at a potential sale in June. Hernández, rated as one of the world’s premier left-backs, may command a transfer fee of €35 million (about $212 million), a sum considered feasible for City.

The signing of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov has solidified the defense, but City continues to explore opportunities to recruit a goalkeeper, as current options Ederson and Ortega have underperformed this season. With significant transactions expected during the next transfer window, the team aims to enhance their roster strategically.
