Manchester City Signs Egyptian Star Omar Marmoush in $72.8M Deal
MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City bolstered their attacking options Thursday by signing Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The deal, reportedly worth 70 million euros ($72.8 million) plus bonuses, marks City’s third signing of the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old Marmoush, who has scored 15 Bundesliga goals this season, joins the reigning Premier League champions after a standout campaign in Germany. Since joining Frankfurt from VfL Wolfsburg in 2023, he has netted 37 goals and provided 20 assists in 67 matches.
“With Pep (Guardiola), his technical staff, and the world-class facilities here, players have everything they need to become better. That was really enticing for me when I had the chance to come here,” Marmoush said in a statement. “I cannot deny I also want to win trophies. City have been the most successful club in England for many, many years, so I know I am joining a winning environment and winning culture.”
Marmoush, who has earned 35 caps for Egypt, began his career with Wadi Degla in the Egyptian Premier League before moving to Germany in 2020. He also had loan spells at St. Pauli and VfB Stuttgart before establishing himself as a key player at Frankfurt.
City, currently fifth in the Premier League and 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, are looking to rebuild after a challenging season. The club has already signed defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis earlier this month, with Marmoush’s arrival adding firepower to their attack.
“Omar is an accomplished and exciting forward, and I’m delighted he’s joining us,” said City director of football Txiki Begiristain. “He has all the attributes a top-class attacker requires. I have no doubt that working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will see him further develop his superb attacking talent.”
Marmoush’s signing brings City’s January spending to a basic £122.5 million as they aim to close the gap in the Premier League and advance in the Champions League, where they face a precarious position in the knockout stages.
