Manly Sea Eagles Secure Gritty Victory Over Sydney Roosters in Jersey Flegg Cup Match
A thrilling Jersey Flegg Cup encounter unfolded as the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles notched their first win of the season by defeating the Sydney Roosters 14-10 at 4 Pines Park. This victory follows closely on the heels of a narrow defeat to the Rabbitohs in the opening round, showcasing the Sea Eagles’ tenacity.
The first half saw the Sea Eagles seize control early on, storming to a 12-point lead with two rapid-fire tries. Oliver Lawry struck first with a try and conversion in the opening minute, setting a strong tone for Manly.
Broden Konz extended the Sea Eagles’ advantage by grounding a perfectly placed grubber kick from halfback Tylor Bunting in the 16th minute. Lawry’s conversion boosted the home side to a commanding lead.
Despite Barton’s sin-binning in the 20th minute, the Roosters struggled to counter the Sea Eagles’ dominance, with Konz narrowly missing another scoring opportunity before halftime.
The Roosters mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, narrowing the deficit to 12-10 with tries from Tyerman and Readon, amplified by Hill’s successful conversion.
With the Roosters closing in, the Sea Eagles showcased resolute defense in the final quarter, forcing errors on both sides. A late interception near the Roosters’ 30-metre line sealed the Sea Eagles’ hard-fought victory, with Lawry calmly converting a late penalty to secure the 14-10 win.
Next, Manly faces off against the Parramatta Eels at New Era Stadium in what promises to be another intense Jersey Flegg Cup clash on Saturday, March 23, at 3pm.
