Manny Pacquiao, WBC to Recreate Thrilla in Manila This October

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and World Boxing Council (WBC) president Mauricio Sulaiman announced the recreation of the iconic “Thrilla in Manila” to mark its 50th anniversary this October. The original event took place at Araneta Coliseum in 1975, featuring a memorable heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
Regarded as one of boxing’s greatest fights, the match was the final bout in the Ali-Frazier trilogy, overshadowed by the political climate of Martial Law under then-President Ferdinand Marcos.
On May 13, Sulaiman shared the news in a video posted on Viva Promotions’ social media. He said, “We’re here in Manila with the great champion Manny Pacquiao and Sean Gibbons—the creation and the memorial of the Frazier-Ali ‘Thrilla in Manila.’” The video featured Pacquiao and MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons alongside Sulaiman.
While a specific date in October has yet to be confirmed, there is speculation that Pacquiao might headline the event. He is also set to face reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in July, raising expectations that this match could be the main event for the commemorative card.
Sulaiman has played a significant role in Pacquiao’s return to boxing, having previously announced it during a visit to Saudi Arabia. However, fans express concerns about Pacquiao’s age and extended absence from the ring, questioning the potential impact on his performance.
