Toronto Maple Leafs Ottawa Senators Playoff Hockey

TORONTO, Canada — The long-awaited first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs kicks off this weekend, with the Toronto Maple Leafs set to face off against the Ottawa Senators for the first time in over two decades. The two teams, both rich in history and rivalry, meet on April 20 at Scotiabank Arena, bringing with them high hopes and intense competitive spirit.

The Maple Leafs, finishing the regular season with a record of 52-26-4 and 108 points, enter the playoffs as the Atlantic Division champions. Conversely, the Senators, with a record of 45-30-7 and 97 points, are back in the postseason for the first time since 2017 after a long rebuilding phase.

This series marks a significant moment in the Battle of Ontario, having not seen the two teams meet in the playoffs since 2004. Historically, the Maple Leafs hold a 16-8 advantage over the Senators in playoff games. The last playoff encounter was a tense seven-game series, where the Leafs ultimately prevailed.

Despite their strong season, the Maple Leafs face the challenge of overcoming a troubling playoff history; they have achieved just one playoff series victory since 2004, with the only modern accomplishment being a first-round win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2023. “You’re always trying to work on your identity,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube stated. “It really boils down to our team and the commitment and the battle we’ll need.”

On the other hand, the Senators are filled with youthful exuberance and energy, led by captain Brady Tkachuk and promising star Tim Stutzle. “This core group hasn’t experienced this,” Senators general manager Steve Staios said. “The playoffs are a different animal. I believe that our group has the mettle to rise up.”

Goaltending will also play a crucial role in this matchup. For the Maple Leafs, Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll have proven effective throughout the regular season, allowing just 231 goals, the eighth-fewest in the NHL. For the Senators, Linus Ullmark has emerged as an impactful figure since his acquisition from the Boston Bruins. He posted a 25-14-3 record with a 2.72 goals-against average this season, dramatically improving the team’s defensive setup.

The postseason is also a significant personal milestone for several key players. For instance, Mitch Marner, who led the Maple Leafs in scoring this season with 102 points, will look to finally make a significant impact in the playoffs. “If we want to achieve our goals, we need our best players to really step up,” Berube emphasized. Similarly, Tkachuk and Stutzle will make their playoff debuts, hoping to lead the Senators to an upset against their heavy-hitting rivals.

In their previous meetings during the regular season, the Senators dominated the Maple Leafs, taking all three encounters. It remains to be seen how this will translate into the playoff atmosphere, where the stakes are significantly higher. “It’s about us,” Berube noted. “I get that Ottawa is a good team, but we have to focus on our game and our process.”

The first game will commence at 7 p.m. ET, and it will be broadcast on ESPN2, CBC, SN, and TVAS. As both teams prepare for this eagerly awaited rematch, the tension surrounding this historic rivalry promises an exhilarating showdown.
