Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Game

Toronto, Canada — Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs are in shock after a controversial penalty call during their playoff game against the Florida Panthers on May 5, 2025. The penalty was issued to Maple Leafs forward Max Domi and has drawn criticism from players and coaches alike.

During the first game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Domi was caught up in an exchange with Panthers forward Brad Marchand. As Domi made minor contact with Marchand near the blue line, the referees issued a cross-checking penalty, a call that left both teams and fans bewildered. Toronto head coach Craig Berube expressed his disbelief, stating, ‘I couldn’t have more strongly disagreed with their decision.’

This playoff series is particularly significant for the Maple Leafs, who advanced to the second round for the first time since 2004. They are facing the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Panthers, who previously eliminated them from the playoffs in 2023.

As the game progressed, tensions rose further after Panthers forward Sam Bennett delivered an elbow to the head of Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz remained in the game initially but soon exhibited symptoms that led to his removal. He reportedly threw up on the bench before being taken to the hospital on a stretcher.

Berube and several Leafs players voiced their concerns over Bennett’s actions. Berube insisted, ‘Elbow to the head. Clear as day… It’s clearly a penalty.’ Maple Leafs defenseman Easton Knies echoed those thoughts, hoping for the league to intervene and protect players.

Despite the tumultuous situation, the Maple Leafs managed to win the game and will look to take a 2-0 lead in the series when they meet again at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday.

Bennett’s actions have led to speculation about potential supplemental discipline from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. The outcome of this incident could affect both teams as the series unfolds.
