Eugene, Oregon – In a highly anticipated matchup, the No. 7 Oregon Ducks will face the No. 15 USC Trojans in Week 13. This game is particularly special as former Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota, the only Heisman Trophy winner in the program’s history, returns as the guest picker for ESPN’s College GameDay.

Mariota is also set to be inducted into the Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class. Current Oregon head coach Dan Lanning praised Mariota’s significant impact on the Ducks during a press conference. “Marcus is a guy that we’re just so proud of here,” Lanning said. “To see the level that he’s been able to play at here and then to carry that on to the NFL is inspiring.”

During his remarkable college career, Mariota shattered numerous records, finishing as the Pac-12 leader in total offense with 13,033 yards. His senior year in 2014 was particularly impressive; he won the Heisman Trophy and led Oregon to a National Championship appearance, setting records for most touchdown passes (42) and passing yards (4,454) in a season.

Now, ten years after being drafted second overall in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota has played in seven games this season for the Washington Commanders, starting in nearly half of them. With the Commanders on a bye week, he has the opportunity to reconnect with his roots in Eugene.

Lanning emphasized the importance of alumni like Mariota returning to support the current team. “We’re glad that they want to be a part of what’s going on here at Oregon,” he said. The Hall of Fame class being inducted with Mariota includes notable former athletes such as Hroniss Grasu, Jenna Prandini, and the 2011-14 women’s indoor track teams.

Current Oregon quarterback Dante Moore expressed his admiration for Mariota, calling him a “GOAT” at the University of Oregon. “Growing up, he was a quarterback that everyone loved watching,” Moore said. Mariota’s legacy goes beyond statistics, as he continues to provide mentorship to current Ducks, highlighting a culture of giving back among former players.

As the Ducks prepare for their pivotal matchup against the Trojans, Mariota’s presence is expected to inspire players and fans alike, further solidifying his legacy at the University of Oregon.
