Mariners Aim to Bounce Back After Opening Day Victory

SEATTLE, Wash. — Following a disappointing shutout loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Seattle Mariners are determined to reclaim their offense as they head into their second game of the 2025 season on March 29. Last night’s 7-0 defeat showcased struggles against Jeffrey Springs’s changeups, prompting the Mariners to reassess their approach.
The Mariners will take the field again tonight, with Bryce Miller on the mound, facing off against Osvaldo Bido of the Oakland Athletics. Bido, known for his hard throw, often struggles with control, making it crucial for the Mariners hitters to capitalize by driving up his pitch count early in the game.
“We’ve got to stay patient at the plate and look for our pitches,” Miller commented ahead of the match. “Getting into their bullpen early could set us up nicely for the rest of the game.”
Despite last night’s shortcomings, the Mariners return to their Opening Day lineup against the right-hander Bido. The Athletics opted for a lineup change, leaving out lefty Seth Brown and replacing him with former Mariners player Luis Urias, who delivered a home run in their previous game.
On the minor league side, the Tacoma Rainiers saw success, winning their Opening Day matchup 6-1 against the Round Rock Express. Notable performances came from Tyler Locklear and Spencer Packard, both contributing multiple hits, while Harry Ford and Ben Williamson recorded their first Triple-A hits.
The Mariners’ pitching has been a stronghold for the team, evidenced by last season’s success with a fantastic rotation. However, the offense needs to improve significantly if they aim to contend for the playoffs this year.
Dan Wilson, a coaching analyst for the Mariners, shared his thoughts on Miller’s potential: “He’s a tough competitor. He’s learning how to leverage his mental strength in his game, and that’s pretty special.”
The Mariners’ pitching lineup has earned accolades, but their offensive struggles raised eyebrows over the offseason, as the team made minimal moves to fortify their batting order. Returning players like Victor Robles and Randy Arozarena are expected to play pivotal roles this year.
During the offseason, the Mariners’ front office faced criticism for not making significant additions. However, the consensus is that the potential of the existing players could propel them into contention. As expectations rise, players like Cal Raleigh, who recently signed a long-term deal, are optimistic about the season.
“I believe this team can achieve great things,” Raleigh stated. “We have the right players and management to make a push for the playoffs.”
With the Mariners’ pitching and exciting young talent, fans are hopeful that the team can navigate through adversity as they aim for a successful season in the AL West.
Tonight’s game against the Athletics will be broadcasted on ROOT Sports NW and can also be streamed via their new app.
