Mariners Aim to Overcome Orioles After Tough Loss

Mariners Orioles Baseball Game

SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle Mariners are looking to bounce back against the Baltimore Orioles tonight after suffering a disappointing 5-1 loss in Tuesday’s series opener. This defeat pushed the Mariners down to second place in the American League West by just a fraction. However, there is a silver lining; with an Astros loss earlier in the evening, a win tonight could propel the Mariners back to the top of the division.

Emerson Hancock is set to take the mound for the Mariners, while the Orioles will counter with lefty Cade Povich. Both pitchers have had mixed performances this season, reflected in their Baseball Savant profiles, but each has also displayed moments of promise.

Interestingly, the Orioles, who started the season with a 16-34 record and seemed an easy target for Seattle, have turned their season around recently, winning seven of their last nine games. They have allowed two or fewer runs in each of those victories. Additionally, the Mariners have lost their last four series against Baltimore, a streak they hope to end.

In preparation, Mariners pitchers practiced their fielding, a rare activity this late in the season. Pitching coach Dan Wilson remarked, “We haven’t done that since spring training. This is a chance to help the pitchers be more athletic.” Bryan Woo stood out during the drills, earning high praise for his efforts, with Wilson stating, “He probably gets the A+.”

Fans can catch the game starting at 6:40 PM PT on ROOT Sports NW, featuring commentary from Aaron Goldsmith, Dave Valle, and Jen Mueller. For radio listeners, coverage will be available on 710 AM Seattle Sports, hosted by Rick Rizzs, Gary Hill Jr., and Angie Mentink.
