Mariners Starters Near Return as Season Progresses

SEATTLE, WA — The Seattle Mariners are on the verge of a much-anticipated return of their injured starting pitchers. General Manager Justin Hollander announced Tuesday that Bryce Miller is expected back in the rotation during the team’s nine-game homestand this week, which opens with a game against the Washington Nationals. Miller has been recovering from elbow inflammation and was eligible to return after two weeks on the injured list.
Hollander stated that Miller completed a bullpen session on Monday without any issues. He revealed that Miller has a small spur in his elbow but emphasized that it should not interfere with his return. “We feel like we’ve taken care of that now. He feels good, so we don’t anticipate any further management,” said Hollander.
Logan Gilbert, another key starter, will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma this week. Hollander noted that Gilbert’s assignment will likely start with three innings, and he will need to make multiple appearances before rejoining the big league club. Gilbert has been on the injured list since late April due to a flexor strain.
The Mariners already welcomed back 2023 All-Star George Kirby last week from the injured list after he dealt with shoulder inflammation. Kirby is set to make his second start of the season on Wednesday against the Nationals.
While the Mariners aim to return to a five-man rotation, Hollander mentioned that there’s a possibility they may explore using a six-man rotation if all starters are healthy. He acknowledged, however, the challenges associated with roster constraints. The Mariners currently have limited pitcher spots available in their roster.
“Starting pitchers are fussy. They don’t like that,” said Hollander, referencing the rhythm that starters prefer to maintain.
The Mariners currently lead the American League West, and the return of their starting pitchers could be crucial for their continued success in the season.
