Mark Robinson Departs AFL 360 After 15-Year Tenure
Mark Robinson, the long-time co-host of “AFL 360” on Fox Footy, is set to leave the program at the end of the current season, as officially announced by the network. This marks the conclusion of Robinson’s 15-year association with the show, a period over which he has become a familiar presence in Australian rules football broadcasting.
The news regarding Robinson’s departure was disclosed during the season finale, although Robinson was notably absent. Instead, it fell to his co-host, Gerard Whateley, to inform the audience. Robinson has been a significant figure in sports journalism, also known for his role as chief football writer for “The Herald Sun.”
Speculation has arisen regarding whether Robinson’s departure was entirely his decision. Earlier statements from News Corp suggested Robinson had chosen to step down, but the absence of a personal statement from him has led to conjecture about the circumstances of his exit. The timing coincides with ongoing changes within the landscape of AFL broadcasting.
As the industry prepares for the upcoming AFL television rights agreement set to commence in 2025, competing networks like Channel 7 are also adjusting their lineups. Notably, they have recruited high-profile sports commentators including Caroline Wilson, Kane Cornes, and Craig Hutchison, adding to the reshuffling ahead.
During the show’s finale, Whateley shared heartfelt reflections on his partnership with Robinson, saying, “Tonight, the big thank you is to Robbo. We’ve shared 15 years at the desk together. We were brought together with almost nothing in common, other than footy. It’s a passion that bound us to each other, and also bound us to you.” He continued by acknowledging the longevity of their joint tenure and expressing gratitude for the experience.
Looking to the future, Whateley assured viewers of his continued involvement with “AFL 360,” confirming, “I’ll see you for 360 next year.” Additionally, Whateley is anticipated to expand his role within Fox Footy as part of the new commentary team lineup.
