US Markets, Postal Service Close to Honor Jimmy Carter
The United States will honor the late former President Jimmy Carter with a National Day of Mourning on Thursday, January 9, 2025, as declared by President Joe Biden. The day coincides with Carter’s official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, where Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy. President-elect Donald Trump has also confirmed his attendance at the service.
In observance of the day, major financial markets, including the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, will close. Nasdaq will also hold a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m. EST. The bond market will close at 2 p.m. EST, following a recommendation by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. Tal Cohen, Nasdaq president, stated, “We mourn the loss of President Carter and will be closing our U.S. markets during the National Day of Mourning to celebrate his life and honor his legacy.”
The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular operations on January 9, with limited package deliveries still possible. The National Postal Mail Handlers Union confirmed the suspension, noting that regular services will resume on Friday. All Postal Service facilities will fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through sunset on January 29.
Federal departments and agencies will also close, though essential employees in national defense and security may continue working. The Supreme Court building will be closed, though it is not scheduled to be in session that day. The last National Day of Mourning was observed in December 2018 following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
