Markieff Morris Reflects on Family’s Influence in His NBA Journey

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — As he reflects on his NBA journey, Markieff Morris credits his success to the unwavering support of his mother, Thomasine “Angel” Morris. The Lakers power forward shared his heartfelt appreciation for her influence on his life and career today, on what he affectionately calls ‘Foe Day Momma.’
Growing up in the city renowned for its basketball culture, Morris was shaped by the values instilled by his mother. Born in the heart of Pennsylvania, Morris grew up alongside his twin brother, Marcus, and three other siblings, navigating the challenges of their upbringing together. “I’ll always love my Momma, she brought me in this world,” he declared, emphasizing the critical role she played in his development as both an athlete and a man.
Despite the absence of their father, Thomasine raised her five children single-handedly, embodying strength and dedication. “I love you, and work hard,” was her constant reminder to them before every game, offering a legacy of encouragement that propelled her sons forward.
Markieff recalls the times he and Marcus would sneak into their local gym after hours, captivated by their shared love for basketball. “We didn’t have fancy facilities or trainers, just the drive to succeed,” he said. That resilience and commitment fostered a close bond, paving the way for their professional careers.
In the NBA, the Morris twins have supported each other through thick and thin. Markieff was there for Marcus when the latter played for the LA Clippers, especially during a tense Game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks. It was a moment of triumph for Marcus, who hit seven 3-pointers despite struggling earlier in the playoffs. “Win, lose, or draw, family comes first,” Marcus remarked, showcasing the fierce loyalty that defines their relationship.
Understanding their platform’s potential, the brothers founded the Family Over Everything Foundation (FOE) in 2017 alongside Thomas Robinson, a teammate who faced the loss of his mother. Thomasine’s nurturing spirit resonated beyond her immediate family, as she became a guiding force for Robinson and others in need.
FOE focuses on providing mentorship and resources to single-parent families and underserved communities across Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston, and Los Angeles. The foundation reflects their commitment to give back, honoring the lessons learned from their mother.
While his familial bonds take center stage, Morris has chosen to keep details about his faith private. Despite the spotlight shining on his basketball career, he maintains a boundary regarding his spiritual life. “Family and basketball are my world,” he stated, showcasing a desire to keep that aspect of his life introspective.
In a society where personal lives are often broadcast on social media, Markieff’s decision to prioritize privacy regarding his beliefs reflects a thoughtful approach to both his identity and his platform.
