Marlee Matlin Henry Winkler Sundance Documentary

PARK CITY, Utah — A new documentary premiering at the Sundance Film Festival explores the decades-long friendship between Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin and actor Henry Winkler. Directed by Shoshannah Stern, “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore” delves into their unique bond, which began when Winkler saw a 12-year-old Matlin perform in a Chicago variety show.

The documentary, which premiered on Thursday, Jan. 23, features interviews with both Matlin, 59, and Winkler, 79, reflecting on their close relationship. Matlin, known for her role in “Children of a Lesser God,” credits Winkler and his wife, Stacey, with helping her through one of the most challenging periods of her life. “I’m always so very grateful for that family who took me in at one of the worst times of my life,” Matlin told PEOPLE via interpreter Jack Jason.

“Not Alone Anymore” also chronicles Matlin’s journey from her historic Oscar win at age 21 to her advocacy for deaf representation in Hollywood. The title references Matlin’s comment after the 2021 film “CODA” and its deaf star earned Oscars, 35 years after her own win. The documentary includes footage from Matlin’s 1993 wedding to husband Kevin Grandalski, which took place in Winkler’s backyard.

“That was great,” Matlin said with a smile. “A fun fact, to talk to people about how I got married at Henry’s house. But actually, I don’t see him as the Fonz. I see him as my family friend, a second father.”

Director Shoshannah Stern emphasized Matlin’s hard work and resilience, rejecting comparisons to a “Cinderella story.” “Marlee has worked so hard,” Stern said. “But Henry Winkler is definitely the fairy godmother.” Matlin quickly corrected her, laughing, “Fairy godfather!”

The documentary also highlights Winkler’s role in Matlin’s life, including his recent meeting with her granddaughter, Brooklyn. “That really gave me so much pleasure, to see the two of them meet,” Matlin said. “It just gave me chills.”

“Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore” does not yet have a theatrical release date.
