Marouane Fellaini Retires from Football as Mourinho Pays Tribute
Former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. Fellaini, who played under manager Jose Mourinho during their time together at Manchester United, made the decision after a successful career spanning over two decades.
Having started his career at Belgian club Standard Liege, Fellaini gained prominence and earned a move to Everton in 2008. His impressive performances in the Premier League caught the attention of then-Manchester United manager David Moyes, who brought him to Old Trafford in 2013. Fellaini’s physicality and versatility made him a key player for United, contributing to several trophy wins during his time at the club.
After Mourinho took charge of Manchester United, Fellaini continued to be an important part of the team, featuring prominently in Mourinho’s first season where the club secured both the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
Following his departure from Manchester United, Fellaini joined Chinese side Shandong Taishan, where he played until his retirement.
Upon hearing of Fellaini’s retirement, Mourinho took to social media to express his admiration for the midfielder. Mourinho stated, ‘I don’t forget who gave me everything he could give. You were and will always be one of mine. Congratulations on your career and rest those ankles that suffered a lot.’
Fellaini, in his retirement announcement, hinted at potential involvement in other footballing avenues, emphasizing his desire to support the beautiful game moving forward.
