Maryland Ivy Leaguer Accused of Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Hires Harvey Weinstein’s Prison Consultant
Luigi Mangione, the Maryland Ivy Leaguer accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has retained Craig Rothfeld, the same prison consultant who advised disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Mangione, who pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges, is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Rothfeld, a former finance professional turned prison consultant, served time for investment and tax fraud before founding Inside Outside Ltd, a firm specializing in advising white-collar defendants. According to his website, Rothfeld has extensive knowledge of the New York City and State correctional systems. He was convicted in 2015 of defrauding $11 million from investors and falsifying business records, receiving a sentence of 1 ½ to 4 ½ years in prison.
Mangione is accused of planning a cross-country trip that culminated in the Dec. 4 shooting of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealthcare was scheduled to hold an investor conference. Thompson, a Minnesota resident, had traveled to New York for the event. Following the shooting, Mangione allegedly fled the city, leading authorities on a five-day manhunt before being apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Police recovered a 3D-printed firearm with a suppressor and a fake ID allegedly used by Mangione to check into a Manhattan hostel. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism at the state level and stalking murder in federal court. Additional charges include carrying a forged ID and criminal possession of a firearm in both New York and Pennsylvania.
Rothfeld’s involvement in Mangione’s case comes after his work with Weinstein, who was convicted of sex crimes in 2020 but later won an appeal. Weinstein remains incarcerated, awaiting retrial, and has faced numerous health issues, including emergency heart surgery and a cancer diagnosis. Rothfeld has served as Weinstein’s authorized legal health care representative in New York.
Mangione’s lead attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has not commented on Rothfeld’s hiring. Rothfeld, when contacted by Fox News Digital, deferred comment to a spokesperson for Mangione. Inside Outside Ltd assists defendants from indictment to sentencing, working with defense attorneys on court filings and letters of support.
The case has drawn significant media attention, with Mangione’s arraignment on Dec. 23, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal proceedings. As the trial progresses, Rothfeld’s expertise in navigating the complexities of the correctional system will likely play a crucial role in Mangione’s defense strategy.
