Massive Table Rock Complex Fire Engulfs Thousands of Acres in South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Table Rock Complex Fire continues to consume thousands of acres in Greenville and Pickens counties, with current estimates placing the blaze at 8,679 acres and 0% containment. The fire, which began on March 21 at Table Rock State Park, has prompted significant emergency management responses and road closures in the region.
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, the initial fire ignited at the top of Table Rock Mountain and quickly spread into the adjacent Mountain Bridge Wilderness area, where it was reported on March 22. The perimeter of the fire now extends over 34.8 miles.
Greenville County Emergency Management officials state that the fire has already impacted at least one-third of the 3,083 acres featured in Table Rock State Park. A spokesperson for South Carolina State Parks confirmed the extensive damage, emphasizing the fire’s rapid growth.
“We’re monitoring the situation closely and remain in constant communication with local authorities. The safety of our community and the preservation of our natural resources is our utmost priority,” said the spokesperson.
As firefighting efforts continue, authorities have closed Sassafras Mountain Overlook due to the fire’s advancing path. This containment effort is vital to ensure the safety of residents and emergency crews working tirelessly to manage the situation.
In response to the ongoing threat, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has closed Geer Highway (US 276) from Echo Drive Extension to SC Highway 8 in both directions. The closures also extend to Highway 11 between West Gate and Pumpkintown, where fresh routes are being established to accommodate emergency vehicles.
“We urge residents to avoid these areas and follow designated travel routes to assist our crews,” said Sheriff Rick Clark of Pickens County. “This fire poses a serious risk, not only to our immediate areas but also to key infrastructure and public safety.”
Additionally, officials at Table Rock State Park have announced the closure of all trail systems, White Oaks Campground, Lake Oolenoy, Lake Pinnacle, and day use visitation until further notice. Visitors are being advised to stay informed through local news and emergency management channels as the situation develops.
Fire crews from various counties are actively working to establish containment lines, but weather conditions are challenging, with dry winds exacerbating the fire’s spread. Local agencies are coordinating their efforts in what has become a multi-agency firefighting operation.
“We’re grateful for the support from neighboring departments and are doing everything possible to protect our lands and communities,” said Chief Brad Wright of the Greenville County Fire Department.
Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of the fire and to remain vigilant as firefighting efforts are engaged, keeping safety as a top priority.
