2025 Masters Preview: Scheffler Defends Title Against McIlroy and Strong Field

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 2025 Masters golf tournament is set to kick off April 10-13 at Augusta National Golf Club, drawing the world’s top golfers to compete for a share of a $20 million purse. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who finished four strokes ahead of Ludvig Åberg last year, opens the tournament as the favorite in a competitive field.
Should Scheffler, the No. 1-ranked player globally, succeed, he will become the first golfer to repeat as champion since Tiger Woods in 2001-02. With betting odds currently at +400 for Scheffler, he is closely followed by Rory McIlroy at +650, as well as Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm, creating an exciting narrative heading into the prestigious event.
“The pressure is on Scottie to defend his title,” said ESPN golf analyst Jason Sobel. “No one has defended the Masters title in over two decades. The weight of expectations will be immense.”
In 2024, Scheffler had a stellar season, claiming nine wins, including both an Olympic gold medal and the FedEx Cup title. However, he faced challenges this year after offseason hand surgery and showed inconsistent performance in his early tournament outings, finishing in a tie for second in his last tournament before the Masters.
“I’m excited about the field this year. Rory is playing exceptionally well and has a chance to win his first green jacket,” Sobel added. McIlroy is coming off victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship this season, which positions him as a strong contender for the title.
In addition to Scheffler and McIlroy, other golfers to watch include Collin Morikawa at +1400 and Ludvig Åberg at +1800, both of whom could surprise. For those considering long shots, Bryson DeChambeau, listed at +2000, has the talent to make a significant impact.
“If you’re banking on course history, Scheffler’s your guy. But if you believe in the momentum McIlroy has built this year, then he’s a compelling choice,” Sobel said. “The Masters always brings pressure, and how players handle it will determine the victor.”
While no golfer has successfully defended their title since Woods, the 2025 Masters is generating anticipation with compelling storylines. With numerous talented players, including those from LIV Golf, the competition is expected to be fierce as the tournament draws closer.
As the excitement builds for the 2025 Masters, golf enthusiasts are left wondering who will don the coveted green jacket come Sunday evening. With both Scheffler and McIlroy in top form, fans are poised for an unforgettable week of golf.”
