Matildas To Be Immortalised With A Bronze Statue At Suncorp Stadium

The Matildas, Australia‘s national women’s soccer team, are set to be commemorated with a bronze statue at Suncorp Stadium by the year’s end. The statue comes as a tribute to the team’s remarkable performance during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, captivating the hearts of the nation with their resilience and skill.

During the World Cup, the Matildas faced tough challenges, including star player Sam Kerr‘s injury and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold’s heroic saves that had the entire country on edge with each match. The team’s journey to the semi-final against England became the most-watched event in Australian television history, solidifying their place in the hearts of fans.

Sport Minister Michael Healy expressed that the bronze statue at Suncorp Stadium will serve as an inspiration for future generations, highlighting the team’s extraordinary achievements. He emphasized the unity felt across Australia as the country rallied behind the Matildas during their historic campaign.

Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman acknowledged the impact of the Matildas in encouraging women and girls to actively participate in organized sports. She lauded the team for their ability to bring the nation together through their outstanding performances on the field, leaving a lasting imprint on Australia’s sporting landscape.

The statue, measuring 6m wide and 2.5m tall, is being crafted by Brisbane-based company Urban Art Projects (UAP). With over 30 years of experience, UAP is tasked with immortalizing a defining moment of celebration from the Matildas’ World Cup journey. Associate Paul Gurney from UAP expressed the company’s honor in delivering this tribute to the team’s inspirational campaign.

Former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the decision to erect the statue following the Matildas’ success at the World Cup in 2023. The statue’s creation involves a mix of robotic and handcrafted techniques to capture the players’ likenesses in bronze, showcasing the team’s spirit and achievements for generations to come.
