Mauritania Emerges as Key U.S. Ally in Sahel Region Amid Global Instability

Nouakchott, Mauritania — In a time when global allies are shifting allegiances, Mauritania stands out as a critical player for American interests in West Africa. The desert nation has managed to maintain stability while surrounding countries experience turmoil from jihadist insurgencies and military coups.
As Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger dive deeper into chaos with their ties to Russian mercenaries, Mauritania has taken a different approach. Since the early 2010s, the Mauritanian government has undertaken extensive reforms to its military and intelligence services, adopting a radical deradicalization strategy. This involves engaging with and reintegrating former jihadists, rather than simply targeting them with force, resulting in Mauritania avoiding major terrorist attacks for over a decade.
The United States has played a crucial role in this transformation through initiatives such as the Trans-Sahara Counterterrorism Partnership and military training missions like Flintlock. However, the U.S. has yet to fully recognize the importance of its partnership with Mauritania, which offers a stable and democratic ally in a region plagued by anti-Western sentiments.
In 2022, Mauritania took a significant step by joining the Global Partnership for Information and Democracy, becoming the 55th nation to support this initiative aimed at promoting press freedom and combating disinformation. This move demonstrates the country’s commitment to democratic values and symbolizes a proactive stance against the narratives that fuel extremism.
Despite its strides, Mauritania remains underappreciated within U.S. foreign policy discussions. The absence of immediate crises may cause it to be overlooked, yet it holds strategic importance in preserving American influence in Africa. Failure to recognize this could jeopardize not only regional stability but also the West’s credibility in combating extremism globally.
To capitalize on this opportunity, the U.S. must enhance security cooperation, bolster democratic institutions, and support press freedom initiatives in Mauritania. Doing so could position the country as a model of stability and democratic governance in a region currently marked by turmoil.
