Mauritania Stuns Algeria To Secure Historic Victory At Africa Cup Of Nations

Algeria has shockingly crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Mauritania claimed their first-ever victory at the prestigious tournament to secure a spot in the last 16. In a thrilling encounter, center-back Yali Dellahi scored the winning goal late in the first half, leading to a stunning upset against the two-time Afcon champions.

Mauritania will now progress to face surprise Group B winners Cape Verde in the knockout stage. On the other hand, Algeria finishes at the bottom of Group D and alongside fellow former champions Ghana, who were also eliminated from the tournament.

The Lions of Chinguetti had to endure late pressure and over 11 minutes of stoppage time as Algeria desperately sought an equalizer. However, the underdogs held on and secured a historic victory, sending them into the next round alongside Burkina Faso and Angola, who topped the group.

Mauritania showcased impressive determination and purpose throughout the match, far outshining their more celebrated opponents. Despite a nervy start, they gradually gained control and created several opportunities to extend their lead. Aboubakary Koita, Aboubakar Kamara, and Pape Ibnou Ba all came close to scoring, but Algeria’s defense managed to hold them off.

Algeria, known for its superb qualifying campaign, failed to deliver in the tournament. They exit without registering a single victory in the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite the introduction of Riyad Mahrez in the second half, Algeria struggled to break down Mauritania’s defense, and their best chances were brilliantly saved by Mauritania’s goalkeeper, Babacar Niasse.

This shocking result further enhances the unpredictable nature of African football and marks another major triumph for coach Amir Amdou, who previously led Comoros to the last 16 on their debut at the 2021 finals.

The Africa Cup of Nations continues to captivate fans around the world, showcasing the depth of talent and surprising outcomes, making it one of the most exhilarating tournaments in international football.
