Maverick McNealy and Michael Thorbjornsen Lead at the 2024 RSM Classic
The 2024 RSM Classic, the final event of the FedEx Cup Fall series, is underway at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. After the first round, Maverick McNealy and Michael Thorbjornsen are tied at the top of the leaderboard with impressive 8-under par scores. McNealy, a Stanford alumnus, navigated the Seaside Course bogey-free, tallying six birdies and an eagle to sign for a 62. Thorbjornsen, also a Stanford graduate and PGA Tour rookie, achieved his 8-under score on the more accessible Plantation Course.
Defending champion Ludvig Ã…berg, who is returning to competition after knee surgery, had a less stellar start, shooting 3 over in his first round. Ã…berg, the World No. 5, is looking to become the first back-to-back winner in RSM Classic history but faces a significant challenge after his initial round.
The tournament is crucial for players on the bubble of the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings. Wesley Bryan, currently in 125th place, and Joel Dahmen, in 124th, are among those fighting to secure full status for the 2025 PGA Tour season. Other notables on the bubble include Daniel Berger, Henrik Norlander, and Hayden Springer.
The second round will see players switching courses, with McNealy moving to the Plantation Course and Thorbjornsen facing the Seaside Course. The event offers a $7.6 million purse, with the winner set to receive $1.368 million and valuable FedEx Cup points that will determine players’ status for next year.
