Mavericks’ Decision on Brunson Hurts More Than Doncic Trade, Says Parsons

Los Angeles, CA — Former NBA player Chandler Parsons believes the Dallas Mavericks’ decision not to sign Jalen Brunson to a contract extension may have been a worse mistake than trading away superstar Luka Doncic. Parsons made this assertion during an appearance on FanDuel’s Run It Back on Monday.

The Mavericks selected Brunson with the 33rd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. After four productive seasons in Dallas, the franchise opted against offering Brunson a four-year, $55 million contract extension prior to the 2021-22 season. Following his breakout performance, Brunson signed with the New York Knicks in free agency, where he has since garnered recognition as a two-time All-Star.

“Not re-signing Jalen Brunson to a $55 million extension could be worse than trading Luka,” Parsons stated, emphasizing Brunson’s significant development after leaving the Mavericks.

This season, Brunson has averaged 26.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 7.4 assists in 35.3 minutes per game, bolstering his status as a key player for the Knicks. In contrast, Doncic remains a foundational figure for the Mavericks and is widely considered among the top five players in the NBA.

While Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round draft pick in the trade involving Doncic, many analysts and fans observe the deal as uneven in favor of the team that retained the generational talent.

The Mavericks’ missed opportunity with Brunson may present a growing concern among the franchise’s supporters, as they focus on potential future decisions that could shape their roster.
