Chicago, IL — The Dallas Mavericks scored a surprising victory in the NBA Draft Lottery on Monday evening, claiming the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavs, who had just a 1.8% chance of winning, are expected to draft highly touted forward Cooper Flagg from Duke University.

Flagg, who showcased incredible skills during his collegiate career, is set to join a Dallas team eager to build around its stars, including Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. Maverick general manager Nico Harrison has faced heavy scrutiny after trading franchise player Luka Dončić, and this victory might help smooth relations with supporters.

“Cooper Flagg will provide an instant impact with his athleticism and high-IQ play,” said Bleacher Report’s NBA analyst Zach Buckley. He emphasized that Flagg’s development and skills make him an ideal fit alongside Irving, especially once Irving recovers from an ACL injury.

Joining the Mavericks at the top of the lottery are the San Antonio Spurs at No. 2 and the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 3. Both teams are rumored to be contemplating trades, seeking veteran stars to enhance their immediate potential.

The Mavericks’ success at the lottery might open discussions about trading their first-round pick. Notably, rising star Derik Queen from Maryland is also a prospect to watch in the upcoming draft on June 25, as he seeks to elevate his status through the NBA Draft Combine.

The Wizards, who finished with one of the NBA’s worst records, were disappointed to drop to the No. 6 pick. Despite this setback, Queen could still emerge as a key piece for their rebuilding efforts alongside young talents like Alex Sarr.

As the draft approaches, all eyes will remain on Flagg and how he might reshape the Mavericks’ future.
