Mavericks GM Nico Harrison Expected to Be Fired Soon
DALLAS, Texas — Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison is expected to be fired during a 10 a.m. meeting with team owner Patrick Dumont on Tuesday, according to sources close to the situation.
Harrison has faced intense criticism from Mavericks fans since he traded star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. The trade sparked protests outside the American Airlines Center, and fans have consistently called for his dismissal, chanting “Fire Nico!” during home games.
The frustration escalated further after the Mavericks fell to a disappointing 3-8 record, placing them second-to-last in the Western Conference. Despite a promising start to his tenure, which included an NBA Finals appearance in 2024, Harrison’s recent decisions have come under scrutiny.
In the trade that sent Dončić away, the Mavericks received Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round pick. While Harrison cited a need to improve the team’s defense as motivation for the trade, Davis has struggled with injuries, leaving the Mavericks with offensive challenges.
Despite the backlash, Harrison stood by his decisions, stating in an April press conference, “There’s no regrets on the trade. My job is to do the best thing for the Mavericks.” This has not quelled the anger from fans and insiders, who consider Harrison’s handling of the situation a failure.
Recently, as the Mavericks continued to struggle, Dumont attended a home game to witness fans’ discontent firsthand. Reports from ESPN indicated the pressure was mounting for Dumont to make a decisive change.
With Harrison likely on his way out, the Mavericks now have a new challenge ahead as they try to secure a better future for the franchise. The team did gain some hope by drafting talented player Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick, but many question if it will be enough to reverse their fortunes.
