Max Fried’s Future Uncertain: Braves Ace Could Join Astros or Cubs in Free Agency
Max Fried, the two-time All-Star pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, is at the center of significant speculation as the MLB free agency period heats up. Following a season where he posted a 3.25 ERA, Fried is projected to command a substantial contract, potentially exceeding $100 million over six years, according to Spotrac.
The Atlanta Braves, who did not meet expectations in 2024, are facing the possibility of losing Fried due to financial constraints. The team is prioritizing the acquisition of a star shortstop, which might make it difficult for them to retain Fried at his projected salary. This situation has opened the door for other teams, notably the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs, to make a move for the left-handed ace.
The Houston Astros, who recently lost Yusei Kikuchi to the Los Angeles Angels on a three-year, $63 million deal, are looking to bolster their rotation. Fried is seen as a potential replacement for Kikuchi, given his reliability and performance. He would complement the Astros’ rotation alongside Framber Valdez, another left-handed starter.
Alternatively, the Chicago Cubs are also in the mix to sign Fried. The Cubs, who have been seeking a true ace for their rotation, could offer a six-year, $160 million deal, as predicted by Fox 43. This move would align with the Cubs’ strategy of strengthening their pitching and could be facilitated by Fried’s familiarity with former Braves teammate Dansby Swanson, who joined the Cubs in a previous offseason.
If Fried does leave the Braves, the team may focus on enhancing their offense, particularly in the outfield. There is interest in signing Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernández, who had a standout season with 33 home runs and is projected to sign a three-year, $69 million deal.
