Max Scherzer Pitching For Texas Rangers 2024

Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, is rumored to be considering a move to either the Atlanta Braves or San Diego Padres for the 2025 MLB season. Scherzer, who turns 41 in July, is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season but remains a sought-after asset for teams in need of experienced pitching.

Ryan Finkelstein, host of the New York Mets Locked On Podcast, predicts Scherzer could land with the Braves. “If the Braves could pull that rabbit out of their hat, why not try again and bet on another aging ace who is coming off an injury-plagued year?” Finkelstein said. Scherzer, who has spent much of his career in the NL East, pitched seven seasons for the Washington Nationals and part of two years with the Mets.

Scherzer’s career accolades include eight All-Star nominations and three Cy Young awards. Despite his age, he posted a 3.95 ERA in 43.1 innings last season. The Braves, who lost Max Fried and Charlie Morton to free agency, are in need of reliable arms. Finkelstein projected Scherzer could sign a 1-year, $16 million deal with Atlanta.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres are also rumored to be interested in Scherzer. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports suggested Scherzer could be a fit for the Padres, especially if they trade ace Dylan Cease. “Scherzer made it clear that he intends to pitch in 2025,” Anderson wrote. “There hasn’t been much buzz on him all winter, however, suggesting that his market may not heat up until after other free-agent pitchers sign.”

Scherzer’s 2024 season was limited to nine starts due to injuries, but he maintained a 1.15 WHIP and 4.18 FIP. If the Padres can trade Cease for a significant return and sign Scherzer at a reduced rate, it could be a strategic move for the team.

Scherzer’s postseason experience is another factor in his favor. He was part of the World Series-winning rosters for the Nationals in 2019 and the Texas Rangers in 2023. His career stats include a 216-112 record, a 3.16 ERA, and 3,367 strikeouts.

While signing Scherzer comes with risks, his potential upside and leadership could make him a valuable addition to either the Braves or Padres as they prepare for the 2025 season.
