Max Scherzer Signs $15.5M Deal with Blue Jays at 40
TORONTO, Canada — Free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer has agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, sources confirmed to ESPN‘s Jeff Passan on Thursday. The deal, pending a physical, marks the latest chapter in the storied career of the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Scherzer, who turned 40 last July, is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season in which he made just nine starts, posting a 3.95 ERA. His season was marred by multiple setbacks, including a herniated disk surgery in the offseason, shoulder fatigue, and a hamstring injury that ended his campaign prematurely.
Once known for his durability, Scherzer made 30-plus starts annually from 2009 through 2018. However, injuries have limited him in recent years, with just 23 starts in 2022 and 27 in 2023. His performance has also shown signs of decline, with his fastball velocity dropping to a career-low 92.5 mph in 2024, down from 93.7 mph the previous year.
“When he did pitch, the stuff was diminished,” said an MLB analyst. “His strikeout rate dropped to 22.6%, and he allowed a .724 OPS, which is higher than the league average.”
Scherzer’s career accolades are undeniable. He has 216 wins, three Cy Young Awards, and two World Series rings, including a pivotal role in the Washington Nationals‘ 2019 championship. He also helped the Texas Rangers secure a World Series title in 2023, despite being limited to just 9.2 innings in the postseason.
The Blue Jays are betting on Scherzer’s experience and leadership to bolster their rotation. “He’s a legend in the game,” said a team insider. “Even if he’s not the same pitcher he once was, his presence and knowledge are invaluable.”
Scherzer’s signing comes as the Blue Jays look to compete in a tough American League East. The team has been active in the offseason, aiming to build a roster capable of making a deep playoff run in 2025.
“This is a great move by Toronto,” said a fan on social media. “Even if he’s past his prime, Scherzer brings a competitive edge that can inspire the team.”
Scherzer’s career WAR of 75.4 ranks among the highest for active pitchers, trailing only Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw. His addition to the Blue Jays’ roster adds depth and experience to a team looking to make noise in the upcoming season.
