Maxi Kleber Cleared for On-Court Work as Lakers Eye Playoff Push

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday that forward/center Maxi Kleber has been cleared to begin on-court activities following right foot surgery on January 30. The development offers a glimmer of hope for the team as they gear up for the playoffs.
Kleber, who joined the Lakers as part of the high-profile trade involving All-Star guard Luka Doncic, has not yet made his debut with the team. He had been sidelined since January 25 due to a broken foot suffered while playing for the Dallas Mavericks.
“Maxi will continue his return-to-play process, and further updates will be provided as appropriate,” the Lakers announced. His swift progress from surgery indicates a potential return, although no specific timetable was given.
Kleber played 34 games for the Mavericks this season, averaging 3.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Known for his stretch big-man abilities, he could enhance the Lakers’ five-out offensive strategy if he regains full fitness.
The Lakers are focused on health above all as they navigate the final week of the regular season while preparing for a playoff run. Kleber’s presence could provide depth off the bench, particularly given his prior playoff experience.
In a recent press conference, Luka Doncic emphasized the championship mindset of the team, stating, “You don’t come here for anything else but championships.” As such, the urgency to integrate new players like Kleber into a postseason-ready lineup is essential.
Meanwhile, starting center Jaxson Hayes has also embraced his role during this critical stretch. Hayes described his time with the Lakers as an opportunity to make an impact and compete for a ring, noting, “I just look at it as I gotta come in, locked in every day, and just try to make the most out of every day to be the best version of myself.”
Although the integration of a player recovering from injury during the playoffs poses challenges, the Lakers are hopeful that Kleber can contribute should he be cleared in time. The team is set to face the Golden State Warriors at 10:00 p.m. EST Thursday, with both squads keen on solidifying their playoff positions.
