Mount Washington Rime Ice Weather

PORTLAND, Maine — A May nor’easter is causing unusual weather conditions across Maine as it winds down on Friday, May 23, 2025. The storm has brought rain, chilly temperatures, and rime ice to the region, particularly on Mount Washington.

Observers at the Mount Washington Observatory reported rime ice on the summit Thursday morning. Rime ice forms when supercooled water droplets freeze on contact with surfaces, which can occur in freezing fog. These conditions create a picturesque but cold scene on the mountain.

The nor’easter has also brought significant rainfall to the area. The National Weather Service forecasts total rainfall to exceed 1.5 inches in most locations, with some areas experiencing even higher amounts. Isolated power outages are possible as the storm continues into Friday morning.

Friday started wet with only a few lingering showers by the afternoon. High temperatures are expected to remain in the 40s, adding to the chill brought on by the northeasterly winds, which are gusting between 30 to 45 mph, particularly along the coast.

As the storm begins to clear, weather conditions are expected to improve over the Memorial Day weekend. Saturday will still see some morning showers, but temperatures will rise into the lower 50s. By Sunday, most areas will reach around 60 degrees with increasing sunshine.

Memorial Day promises to be the warmest day of the long weekend, with highs in the mid to upper 60s. The forecast hints at a mixture of sun and clouds, with the chance of an isolated shower. Following the holiday, even warmer and clearer weather is predicted for the week ahead.
