Maya Joint Faces Anastasija Sevastova at WTA Hong Kong Open
HONG KONG – Anaastasija Sevastova will play against Maya Joint in the opening round of the WTA Hong Kong Open on Monday. This match features a notable clash between the 19-year-old Australian, who is ranked World No. 32, and the 35-year-old Latvian veteran.
The match marks the first meeting between Joint and Sevastova. Joint has made a significant impact this season, achieving a career-high ranking after winning two tournaments. Meanwhile, Sevastova has struggled, winning only 10 of her 21 matches this year.
Sevastova is known for her exceptional slice, which may create challenges for the younger player. Nevertheless, Joint’s speed and stamina could turn Sevastova’s trademark shot into a disadvantage.
“I aim to stay focused and adapt as the match progresses,” Joint said. “Playing against someone with Sevastova’s experience is exciting.”
Dimers’ predictive model gives Joint a 73% chance of winning. It also suggests a 68% likelihood she will take the first set. Sevastova’s recent performance has not been as promising, as she tends to lose against top players.
“I know I need to play at my best,” Sevastova remarked. “Every match is a new opportunity.”
The tournament format continues from October 27 to November 2 at Victoria Park, expecting to draw significant crowds with other notable players such as Leylah Fernandez and Belinda Bencic participating.
As fans await this thrilling encounter, many look forward to how Joint will handle the pressure against a seasoned competitor like Sevastova.
