T.J. McConnell Reflects on Philly Roots Amid Pacers Playoff Push

Philadelphia, PA — T.J. McConnell, who rose from undrafted rookie to beloved player during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, shared his heartfelt sentiments for the city and its fans in a recent podcast appearance. McConnell, currently a point guard for the Indiana Pacers, played the first four seasons of his career with the 76ers after being signed in 2015.
In the latest episode of “The Young Man and The Three” podcast, he recalled the incredible atmosphere of playing in Philadelphia, saying, “That crowd. Playing in front of them, it was pretty incredible. People to this day just walking anywhere, ‘We miss you in Philly.’ They show a lot of love so I got a lot of love for the fans of Philadelphia for sure.”
McConnell, who averaged 4.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds during his time with the Sixers, was mostly a reserve behind players like All-Star Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons as part of a rebuilding phase known as “The Process.” Despite not achieving a breakthrough playoff run during those years, he garnered respect for his work ethic and passionate playing style.
Since leaving Philadelphia in 2019, McConnell has enjoyed a successful career with the Pacers, where he continues to take on a vital role. In his sixth season with Indiana, he has contributed as a reliable backup, maintaining averages of 5.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds.
The Pacers are currently in the Eastern Conference semifinals after defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, and McConnell’s leadership is essential as they face the Cleveland Cavaliers for a chance to advance.
Reflecting on his journey, McConnell added, “Those people embraced me and treated me like one of their own,” underscoring the lasting bond he has with Philadelphia fans.
