Medvedev Battles Through Epic Quarterfinal To Reach Australian Open Semifinals

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev fought his way to the semifinals of the Australian Open after an epic quarterfinal clash against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. The third seed battled for almost four hours at Melbourne Park‘s Rod Laver Arena before securing a hard-fought victory with a delicate drop shot.

Medvedev, a two-time finalist at the Australian Open, demonstrated his resilience as he twice came from a set down in the grueling encounter. Despite his exhaustion from a previous five-set marathon in the second round of the tournament, Medvedev managed to capitalize on the limited opportunities he had against the formidable Hurkacz.

The 27-year-old Russian, who won the 2021 U.S. Open, expressed his relief after the match, stating, ‘I’m so destroyed right now. I felt like every game where I had a small chance, I managed to take it. So really, really happy and proud about that. Because with him you don’t get many chances.’

A determined Hurkacz, who had a winning career record against Medvedev, fought valiantly but ultimately fell short. He acknowledged his opponent’s superior performance on crucial points, saying, ‘I wish I could have gone a little bit further, but still, you know, I gave it all today. It wasn’t enough.’

Medvedev’s upcoming semifinal clash will be against either Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev. The Russian is aiming to secure his first Australian Open title after his previous two runner-up finishes.

Proper Nouns: Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, Australian Open, Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Russia, Tracey Nearmy, Rod Laver Arena, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, U.S. Open
