Meet Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix: Diving Star Overcoming Challenges

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix isn’t your typical 19-year-old. She has emerged as one of Team GB’s brightest diving talents, recently winning a bronze medal alongside her partner Lois Toulson in the women’s synchronised 10m platform event.

However, her journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Growing up as the daughter of Fred Sirieix, the beloved star of First Dates, brought its own set of challenges. Andrea initially struggled with being known primarily as Fred’s daughter rather than for her own achievements in diving.

Andrea’s passion for diving began at a young age, largely thanks to her mother, Alex Spendolini, who encouraged her to dive despite Andrea’s initial reluctance. “My mum forced me to start diving,” she shared with a laugh in a video on Team GB’s YouTube channel.

From the outset, it was clear she had a natural talent for the sport, being talent-scouted at just eight years old. By the age of 13, she had burst onto the international stage, and just two years later, she won her first solo gold at the 2020 FINA Diving Grand Prix.

Her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games was a pivotal moment, yet it came with its own set of challenges. At 16, she faced severe pressure and dealt with what many athletes refer to as the “twisties,” a mental block that leaves them disoriented mid-air. This condition forced Andrea to confront her mental health struggles zealously.

She expressed how overwhelming stress had affected her diving and daily life. “I couldn’t throw myself. I couldn’t do anything simple,” she said, reflecting on her experience during the Olympics. Remarkably, despite the difficulties, she managed to finish seventh, marking Britain’s best individual result by a female diver at those Games.

After her Olympic experience, Andrea contemplated giving up diving altogether. However, she found strength in opening up to family and friends about her struggles. “I used to want to do everything by myself,” she admitted.

With the support of her loved ones, things began to turn around. In 2022, she had a breathtaking year, with victories including double European gold, two Commonwealth titles, and a bronze medal at the World Championships. Last year, she even clinched silver at the 2023 World Championships.

As she looks forward to the upcoming Paris Games, Andrea feels a deep connection, considering it near to her family roots in France. She remains focused on making the most of her experience rather than solely chasing medals.

Andrea’s father, Fred, has been incredibly supportive throughout her journey. Even as he prepares to commentate during the summer games, he plans to watch her dives without working. “I don’t want to comment on my daughter diving. It’s too close to my heart,” he noted.

After securing her latest bronze medal, Andrea is gearing up for her upcoming competition in the individual 10m platform event on August 5. People are eager to see what she will achieve next!
