Meet the Gators’ 7-Foot-9 Freshman Making Waves

Gainesville, Florida — At an unprecedented 7-foot-9, redshirt freshman Jonathan Rioux is garnering attention as he witnesses the University of Florida Gators‘ motivating journey to the Final Four. Although Rioux will not be participating in the games, he is experiencing the excitement that comes with being part of a team competing at such a high level.
“It’s amazing,” said Rioux, who hails from Quebec, Canada. “I think it’s part of the dream for everybody in the sport, and it’s amazing for me to be a part of this.” Rioux’s impressive stature has not only made him stand out on the court but also turned him into one of the most popular figures on campus.
As the Gators prepare for their semifinal matchup, Rioux’s future with the team offers promising potential. He has found camaraderie in competing against Florida’s top athletes, such as 6-foot-10 star Osayi Osifo. To keep up with the demands of the sport and fuel his record-breaking frame, Rioux maintains a rigorous diet, consuming approximately 6,000 calories daily.
“It’s three meals. Yeah, it’s three meals and two plates,” Rioux said in an interview with ESPN on Thursday. This commitment reflects his determination to not only support his team but also prepare for his own upcoming collegiate basketball career.
Despite not taking the court during Florida’s pivotal matches, Rioux’s popularity presents its own challenges. He often finds it difficult to navigate campus life due to the influx of requests for photos and autographs from fans intrigued by his height. “Well, I’ve learned how to say no,” he explained. “Obviously, you’ve got to be respectful and all that, but I’ve learned how to say no.” Nonetheless, he remains eager to indulge the enthusiasm of young fans while balancing his academic responsibilities.
As he continues to support his teammates during this crucial tournament run, Rioux is poised to make a significant impact in the future of Gators’ basketball.
