Tuomas Iisalo Memphis Grizzlies Coach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies appointed Tuomas Iisalo as interim head coach following the unexpected dismissal of Taylor Jenkins, the franchise’s all-time winningest coach, last Friday. Iisalo, 42, takes charge of a team facing turmoil just nine games before the regular season concludes.

In a significant shift for the organization, the Grizzlies made headlines with their decision, indicating their trust in Iisalo’s coaching capabilities. His appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Finnish-born head coach in NBA history. Iisalo has shown promise since joining the Grizzlies as an assistant coach less than a year ago.

“Everybody was in shock in the beginning,” Iisalo said about the team’s reaction to his promotion. “Then, everybody tried to get their bearings. I’ve been extremely pleased and thankful for the guys and how they’ve accepted me in a tough situation.”

The Grizzlies have struggled recently, losing eight of their last eleven games and dropping from the second seed to potential play-in position. In the wake of Jenkins’ firing, management’s support for Iisalo is evident as they aim to revitalize the team’s performance.

Iisalo previously coached in Germany, where he secured significant achievements, including promotions and playoff berths. His journey began at Crailsheim Merlins and continued with Telekom Baskets Bonn, where he won a FIBA Champions League title in 2023.

Kristian Palotie, head coach of Lahti Basketball in Finland, praised Iisalo’s coaching skills: “He’s done an unbelievable job. Everywhere he’s gone, he’s found success.” Iisalo’s tactical knowledge and ability to break down complex plays earned him recognition, as players responded positively to his coaching philosophy.

“Trust is like a three-way street,” Iisalo explained. “You’ve got to have trust that you can do the job. You’ve got to have trust that your teammates will do the job. And you’ve got to have trust in the coaching staff and the system that will produce the win.”

Iisalo’s coaching style emphasizes progression, adopting strategies from soccer to enhance basketball skills. He focuses on creating advantageous matchups and maximizing team performance through intensive practice dynamics. Tyson Ward, a current player, noted, “The level of intensity of practice is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.”

Following his initial win against the Miami Heat on Thursday, the Grizzlies hope that Iisalo can guide the team back into playoff contention. The interim coach’s commitment to the development and success of his players is evident, highlighting his ability to manage a challenging situation.

As the Grizzlies navigate through this transitional phase under Iisalo’s leadership, the team strives to restore stability and confidence, aiming for a strong finish to the season.
