Memphis Grizzlies’ Roster Turnover Reaches Franchise Record Amid Injury Woes
The Memphis Grizzlies have found themselves navigating a tumultuous season as injuries have plagued the team, leading to a franchise record in roster turnover. The recent addition of Maozinha Pereria marks the 29th player to take the court for the Grizzlies this season.
Surpassing previous records set in the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons, the Grizzlies have faced a myriad of challenges in terms of player availability. Injuries have been the primary driver behind the constant shuffling of the roster, with key players such as Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart, and Steven Adams facing extended absences.
Among the roster transactions that have contributed to the high turnover rate, the signing of Bismack Biyombo via suspension exemption, as well as the elevation of GG Jackson and Vince Williams Jr. from two-way contracts to the main roster, have played significant roles.
In response to long-term injuries, the Grizzlies have utilized injury hardship exceptions to bring in temporary reinforcements such as Jordan Nowell, Shaq Harrison, Tosan Evbuomwan, Wenyen Gabriel, DeJon Jarreau, Matthew Hurt, Jordan Goodwin, and Trey Jemison. Notably, Goodwin and Jemison saw promotions to two-way contracts following the reshuffling of the roster.
With only Jaren Jackson Jr. having participated in over 60 games this season, the Grizzlies have faced an uphill battle in maintaining a consistent lineup. The likes of Santi Aldama, John Konchar, Ziaire Williams, and Vince Williams Jr. have also faced various periods of absence due to injuries.
The Grizzlies’ March Madness has been compounded by significant injuries to projected starters, further complicating the team’s efforts to find stability amidst a challenging season. Despite the unexpected roster turnover, the team continues to show resilience amid adversity.
